Emily Dickinson – Je n’ai pas eu le temps de détester…

BEAUTY WILL SAVE THE WORLD

Je n’ai pas eu le temps de détester,
La tombe était trop près, j’aurais
Raté ma haine, une vie est si courte,
L’inimitié si longue à fabriquer.

Je n’ai pas eu, non plus, le temps d’aimer,
Mais puisqu’il faut faire un effort, j’ai éprouvé
Quelques minces douleurs d’amour ; assez
Pour pouvoir dire : j’ai essayé.

*

I had no time to hate, because
The grave would hinder me,
And life was not so ample I
Could finish enmity.

Nor had I time to love; but since
Some industry must be,
The little toil of love, I thought,
Was large enough for me.

Words for the Year

Oh do you have time
to linger
for just a little while
out of your busy

and very important day
for the goldfinches
that have gathered
in a field of thistles

for a musical battle,
to see who can sing
the highest note,
or the lowest,

or the most expressive of mirth,
or the most tender?
Their strong, blunt beaks
drink the air

as they strive
melodiously
not for your sake
and not for mine

and not for the sake of winning
but for sheer delight and gratitude –
believe us, they say,
it is a serious thing

just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.
I beg of you,

do not walk by
without pausing
to attend to this
rather ridiculous performance.

It could mean something.
It could mean everything.
It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote:
You must change your life.

Et que rien ne se perde

Comment comprendre:

Le Big Bang est il un fait?

D’où vient la matière?

The shepherd sleeps

The sheeps walk alone in

The darkest valley.

Feeding on delusions,

The light has left them
